KIK'S UBER GUIDE TO FISHING
Level 1-6- Bamboo Rod and Little worms for Crayfish (7) and Moat Carp (11). You should save up 10K from your moat carp sales for your best rod upgrade of the game.
Level 6-10- BUY THE COMPOSITE ROD!! Don’t be a cheap bastard. I’ve had mine since level 6 and I am at level 39 as I write this. It has NOT broke once!!! No breaks=less money spent. Buy a Sabiki Rig at the Fisherman’s guild in Port Windy. Fish right off the dock for Bastore Sardines(10) and Quus(19). You will catch them up to 3 at a time, which is a plus but not worth as much money as the Moats you are used to. Also you can use the Sardines to level cooking up to 11, which is something you should do if you plan on going for Lu Shang’s rod.
LEVEL 10- Turn in a Moat Carp for first test!!!!!!
Level 10-20- Buy about 5 fly lures and head to East Ronfaure. You will snap your line a few times, and you don’t want to be left without any lures away from the bait shop, trust me!! Here you are looking for Cheval Salmon(21) but you will catch the occasional shining trout(37) as well.
LEVEL 20- Turn in a Cheval Salmon for second test!!!!!!
Level 20-30- You have 3 choices here as to what is your best route, and not all of them are pretty.
Choice 1- West Saburtara with a sinking minnow and Composite rod. Here you are after Dark Bass(33) and Giant Catfish(31). This was by far the WORSE but safest route to take. I leveled this up to 23, supposedly you can level it up to 30, but after almost 2 weeks of nothing, I tried to hunt out a better location.
Choice 2- North Gustaberg with Insect Balls and Composite rod. You want Tri-colored Carp(27) here, and the occasional Gold Carp(56) (not for skill-up though…for money…600 gil when sold to NPC). You can level here up to 27, though I stopped at 25. That is when I found the gold mine after I leveled up my chara some.
Choice 3- Jugner Forest lake with insect balls and composite rod. An enormous selection of the Carp family in this lake including Dark Bass(33) and Giant Catfish(31). So make sure to switch bait and lures often when the biting starts getting weak. Targets here are numerous and are: with insect paste- Moat Carp (for insect paste funds), Tri-colored Carp(27), Dark Bass (33), and the occasional Gold Carp (also for insect paste funds). With Sinking Minnow your targets are- Giant Catfish (31) and Dark Bass(33). Yes the lure and the paste both catch Dark Bass, which is your major skill-up fish at this level!
LEVEL 30- Turn in a Giant Catfish for your third test!!!!!
Level 30-40- Move to South Gustaberg with Sinking Minnows. I suggest you buy at least 6 of them from the ferry for 300 a piece. You will lose at least 4 and it is better than getting raped at the AH paying 2K!!! This place was decent leveling. You will catch Ogre Eel (35), Gold Lobster (46), and Zalmug Bass (48). I caught 5 stacks of gold lobster while leveling here, and just selling 4 of them at over 600 a pop made up for any money wasted on lures and and ship fares.
LEVEL 40- Turn in a Gugura Tuna for your fourth test!!!!
A quick note on this fish. It can and WILL snap your composite rod in half like a twig. Let us do the math….a new composite rod at AH when available….10K. A Gugura Tuna on sale at the AH 600-700.…hmmmm….I wonder which we should choose?! I’m sorry, but my lucky composite rod is not worth my pride….buy the damned tuna so you don’t snap a rod. You still got quite a few levels to go with this baby before she gives in on ya!!!
